Northern Ireland U17s – European Championships 2026, Aberdeen.

Northern Ireland’s U17 squad delivered determined performances at the Europe Netball U17 Championships in Aberdeen last weekend, highlighting the growth of a young and talented squad. Emilia Gordon and Thea Uprichard captained the side with maturity and leadership throughout the tournament.

With ten players making their U17 debuts, the team gained invaluable international experience. On day one, Northern Ireland narrowly lost 49–48 to Scotland in a thrilling match that remained tight from start to finish.

Day two saw a dramatic contest against neighbours Republic of Ireland, where Northern Ireland led by four goals at halftime but fell 44–42 after a strong third-quarter push from the opposition. Later that day, the team faced eventual champions England, who won 75–34. Northern Ireland finished the final quarter strongly (12–14) with all 12 players contributing, gaining vital experience against top-tier opposition.

The weekend concluded with a competitive match against the United Arab Emirates, finishing 49–47, reflecting the team’s determination in a tournament-style format.

A standout achievement came as Ruby Tolland was named Player of the Tournament, a prestigious accolade recognising her exceptional performances and impact. An award won previously by our very own Evelyn McCagherty.

While results were mixed, the close scorelines and the progress shown highlights the positive direction of the programme. The experience gained provides a strong platform for these young athletes as they continue their development within the Northern Ireland pathway.

This tournament is a testament to the dedication of the players, coaching staff, and all in the U17 National Academy. The squad’s resilience and growth over three closely contested games point to a bright future for Northern Ireland netball. Thankyou to everyone who has sponsored and fundraised for the National Academy squads this season.
