A LITTLE SUPPORT.
A LASTING DIFFERENCE.

Picking up a whistle takes courage. Building confidence takes practice.

Support Our Umpires is a four-week Netball Northern Ireland campaign supporting under 18 umpires and people new to umpiring at any age.

Some young umpires already have experience. Some new umpires start later in life. Every umpire deserves respect, encouragement and the opportunity to develop.

Our mission & vision

Our mission

To encourage respectful behaviour and practical support that help under 18 and new umpires feel safe, valued and confident to develop.

Our vision

A netball community where every umpire is treated with respect, young officials are supported and new umpires of every age can learn, progress and choose to stay in the game.

01

EVERY UMPIRE
STARTS SOMEWHERE

Give every umpire patience, encouragement and room to develop.

02

YOUR REACTION
MATTERS

Your words and body language shape an umpire’s experience. Keep both respectful.

03

BE PART OF THE REASON
THEY KEEP UMPIRING.

Encourage, thank and support umpires so they feel valued and want to continue.

RESPECT IS
EVERYONE’S
RESPONSIBILITY.

What you say and how you respond can shape an umpire’s experience.

Choose your role to find practical ways to help.

01Players

PLAY YOUR PART. RESPECT THE WHISTLE.

A decision may not go your way. What happens next is your choice.

  • Keep your words and body language respectful.
  • Help your teammates stay focused on the next passage of play.
  • Give young and new umpires room to make decisions and develop.
  • Take a moment to thank the umpires after the match.
02Coaches & clubs

COACHES SET THE STANDARD

Your example influences players, your bench and supporters.

  • Welcome developing umpires before the match.
  • Make respectful behaviour a clear expectation.
  • Step in when comments become inappropriate.
  • Raise concerns through the appropriate club or competition channels.
Read the Code of Conduct
03Parents & supporters

YOUR REACTION MATTERS

A shout, an eye roll or a sarcastic comment can stay with the person holding the whistle long after the match.

  • Bring encouragement and celebrate the players.
  • Show respect for officials through your words and body language.
  • Respond respectfully, even when you disagree with a decision.

Shouting, sarcasm and intimidation have no place in an umpire’s development or in our game.

04Experienced umpires & mentors

SUPPORT BUILDS CONFIDENCE

A calm conversation and practical advice can make a lasting difference.

  • Use an agreed mentoring or feedback conversation.
  • Recognise a strength and discuss one area to develop.
  • Agree a manageable next step.
  • Keep feedback constructive and respectful of the person receiving it.
05Under 18 & new umpires

YOU DESERVE RESPECT.

Whether you are under 18, new to umpiring, or both, you deserve to feel safe, valued and supported on court.

Confidence develops through experience, encouragement and constructive guidance. A difficult moment should be an opportunity to learn.

If you need guidance or want to raise a concern, use NNI’s existing policy and support routes below.
